Looks English, early 20th century and I don't think it's Agatha Christie. I'll try Daphne du Maurier.

English is right and the picture would have been taken around 1920. Not Daphne or Agatha though.

She looks quite young so born at the end of the 19th Century - it's not Barbara Cartland is it? I've only ever seen her as an old woman..

Not Babs. By the look of her, I think SHE was born around 1765.

Is this Virginia Woolf when she and her friends pretended to be African princes to tour a navy warship?

Not Virginia. This lady was known for a popular series of books which spanned nearly 50 years from the first one in 1922, which was meant to be a potboiler while she concentrated on her "serious" stuff, up to the 39th which was published posthumously in 1970 .

The books have spawned radio series, stage plays, films and more TV series' than you can shake a stick at.

Ah - Richmal Crompton then? Though I wouldn't have a clue what she looked like but the dates are about right.
