Having just watched The Day of the Jackal again for the umpteenth time I begin to wonder if the answer isn't Charles de Gaulle. As Danny pointed out some of the attempts on Castro were ludicrous.

Sorry for the delay, Bigal is correct.
It was Charles de Gaulle, Castro comes in a close second if memory serves.

Name two English monarchs who were older when they came to the throne than their predecessor had been when they (the predecessor) died.

Tough one!

Would have said George VI was older than Edward VIII, but I guess Edward adbicated rather than died?

So a couple of pretty random guesses -

Queen Mary + George V

You've got one of them MARY TUDOR was the elder sister of Edward VI and therefore meets the criteria. But George V was the younger brother of Edward VIII.

Okay, I'm allowing myself another 2 guesses! -

Queen Anne
Queen Mary II
