It is often wrongly alledged that Karl Marx said "Religion is the Opium of the People". What should the quotation be?

from my days of sociology AND politics at college the quote is
"Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of souless conditions. It is the opium of the people."

Whilst yours is the version found in Wikipedia and the like the last short sentence is a misquotation of the original. (The preceding sentence is correct but the last one should read "Religion is the ....... of the ..... " I seek someone to supply the correct missing words.

well my meaning was taken from an old college text book, the site that you have used says

Marx is often misquoted as having said "Religion is the opiate of the people." Perhaps that's what you had in mind.

The sources I consulted said that it should be the "OPIATE of the MASSES".
I think it would be best, in these circumstances to drop the question and allow you, honoured guest, to set us another one. :)
