"I'm not good-looking. I used to be but not any more. Not like Robert Taylor. What I have got is I have character in my face. It's taken an awful lot of late nights and drinking to put it there. When I go to work in a picture, I say, 'Don't take the lines out of my face. Leave them there.'"

Which golden age screen legend?

An interviewer asked this man during the Falklands War, "What would happen if Margaret Thatcher got run over by a bus?". His reply was "It wouldn't dare."

He had a long and varied career - he was a Major in the Grenadier Guards during World War 2 and was at Arnhem during the "A Bridge Too Far" assault. He is the only surviving member of Churchill's last cabinet and was a cabinet member of every Conservative prime minister between Churchill and Thatcher. He also found time to be Australian High Commissioner, First Lord of the Admiralty and Secretary General of NATO. At 96 he is currently the longest serving member of the House of Lords. Despite all of his achievements he will be best remembered for the failure that ended his political career. Who is he?

Not Yogi, but someone equally prone to foot in mouth disease, and who lent his own name to his plethora of linguistic slip-ups.
