This was on Radio 5 the other week and if I remember rightly its because they won the FA cup in 3 consecutive years way back in the 1880s or 90s.

Thats an obscure one that crops up every now & again. Geoff Hurst played one First Class cricket match for Essex (I think, could've been Middlesex) in the early 60's but then football took over and the rest, as they say, is history!
