Having just watched The Day of the Jackal again for the umpteenth time I begin to wonder if the answer isn't Charles de Gaulle. As Danny pointed out some of the attempts on Castro were ludicrous.

It was Charles de Gaulle, Castro comes in a close second if memory serves.

Would have said George VI was older than Edward VIII, but I guess Edward adbicated rather than died?

You've got one of them MARY TUDOR was the elder sister of Edward VI and therefore meets the criteria. But George V was the younger brother of Edward VIII.
