After reading something on the forum, I thought it might be interesting to have a little debating area. Topics can be quiz related or not and serious or not...though there are some things we'd probably best avoid for health and safety reasons Laughing

Posts ideally should be greater than one word answers and other people's views should be respected no matter how bonkers or unlogical they may seem.

Each friendly debate will last for up to a week (shorter if we lose the will to live with it).

No poking or gouging (me excluded).

My first suggestion is this............

Obtaining answers for quizzes and crossword puzzles on answer forums is cheating and shouldn't be allowed!

Debate!

Getting answers from any source other than your own resources and knowledge is certainly cheating (and frankly a bit sad). When, as regards Seraphim's two questions, which I'm told by a colleague who does it are on this month's Great British Quiz, there are prizes to be won - then this seems unjust on those who enter without cheating.

Perhaps I'm just getting reactionary as I grow older but I get annoyed by people "googling" on Mobiles during pub quizzes. Where is the satisfaction in winning that way ?

I think it depends on the quiz concerned.

Pub quizzes and mobile phone usage thereof is one of my pet hates too and they're so blatant with it. I agree that that sort of quiz should be on the people present on the night's general knowledge. Similarly on here........and why I do so badly on some folk's quizzes.............cos I personally don't know and don't google (rarely I do, but I admit to my naughtiness then!).

I thought though that a lot of the internet quizzes expected you to do a bit of research by books and the internet......................the folks who can answer these things from their own head must be incredibly knowledgeable!
Is it "less bad" to look something up in a library than just ask in a forum?
Is asking in a forum worse than asking a mate at work?
Will they even tell you the right answers on a forum? Twisted Evil

Plus you can't guarantee anybody's actions unless you lock them in a room....so how does one know who's cheating or who's just very clever?

I regard using mobiles in pub quizzes as a complete no-no and would bar anyone caught using them. For our quizzes on the forum I wouldn't use the internet unless it was a question that had been on for ages, was ridiculously difficult and no normal person would know the answer

For quizzes requiring Internet research then I really don't know where the dividing line lies - it's certainly a grey area. Using Wiki clearly isn't cheating any more than checking in books is cheating. If you use a search engine and the answer comes up in, say, Yahoo Answers is that cheating? And if that is not cheating then why is it different to using a forum like ours? I personally think the line is at asking other people the answer to the question - so for me Yahoo Answers is fine but asking on our forum is not.

Bigal says the question is from the Great Brain Quiz which personally I've never seen but that being the case I won't answer any more of Seraphim's question. The ignorant so-and-so never says thanks anyway.

P.S. JUS - His question relates to the nicknames of Haydn's symphonies - the one in question is nicknamed the "Clock Symphony"

I'm still a relative newcomer on here, but I'd like to add that a pet hate of mine is people checking diaries during a pub quiz.

Most diaries contain a map of the London Underground, so if I ask a question involving the underground, I always state " No checking Diaries", but really it should not be necessary to state that.

my problem is, though I set & write the questions, my work pattern rarely allows me to be there to read them out & I can't guarantee that the guy who does read them out keeps an eye out for that sort of thing happening.

If that's your pic then the answer to that is probably "where do I join the queue?"

Is anyone else getting fed up with coverage of Amy Winehouse? If she wants to destroy herself let her do so and stop plastering pictures of her in various levels of narcosis in every newspaper. I'd hate to feel alone in the view.

You are not alone in your view Re Amy Winehouse. She has a great talent, but is squandering it with indecent haste. I'm not advocating violence here, but she (at least metaphorically), needs a good slap to bring her to her senses.

I like Amy Winehouse. I wonder whether she fits the criteria to be sectioned as being a danger to herself and if so, why don't they put her away for her own good (and not just rehab)?

I also wonder with other artists who are always in the papers for drugs (Pete Docherty) if we mistake their notoriety for actual talent.

Amy's good, Pete's not! but she and the rest of the druggies
shouldn't get any more publicity untill they clean their act up!

it wasn't like this when i was a cub!

It would be tempting to put Amy in the "Flawed Genius" category but I do get the impression that she is very clever & has realised that, despite being an extremely talented singer (even when ripped to the tits on drugs), she will make more money if the lurid stories continue. There's no such thing as bad publicity remember.

If she wants to destroy herself whilst making that money then so be it. I don't think she's in the market of the "tweenagers" so I just hope her lifestyle & "activities" are not creating that much of an impression on those who are young enough to not think for themselves.

My only guess is it's the same reason that joe dolce made
it to number one with shut uppa ya face, keeping Ultravox's
Vienna off the top spot!

The theory is that only 2 types of people (at the time) we're
buying singles, the first group is kids, from big to small,
they drove the singles chart, and that is why it differs so
much from tha album chart, in the good old days you could
go and buy your favorite single with your pocket money,
where as albums are more expensive and are bought by an
older audience.
The second group was mums, going with the kids to the shop
and buying a single. Now i'm not saying that kids and mums
have bad taste, because we all like different things. But they
didn't like Vienna as much and the rest is history.

To put this theory to the test I am now gonna ask one simple
question, Do you know any grown men that watch Strictly Come
Dancing?

I'm waiting.......

See what I mean? mums with kids are sat at home in front of
the telly trying to keep 'em quiet for an hour before bedtime
and none of them are really watching it at all! Wink
