Anne of Green Gables. I've never read it, but I know that the actress Dawn Paris played the eponymous role in the 1930s film and kept the name Anne Shirley for the rest of her career.

"was" implies he's dead and I only know one dead actor who was also pretty well known as a painter so I'll try Anthony Quinn.
