| In 1776 the Spanish set up a Catholic mission and a small village called Yerba Buena grew up around the mission. In the 1820s the village became part of another country. In the middle of the 19th century the village of 1,000 people changed hands again after a war and the conquerors renamed it after the original Catholic mission with the name it still bears today. Unlucky Stevie - good logic to get the right part of the world but the clue was in the question. It was renamed after the mission of San Francisco...mind you I suppose it's not beyond the bounds of possibility that there would be a mission of Los Angeles so I take that back - just unlucky.  |
