Ah OK, this is Offenbach's Tales of Hoffman then. I had Coppelia (the ballet by Delibes) in my head because both ballets are based on the book The Sandman which was written by Hoffman.

Hoffman was a very well known writer of horror and fantasy literature in the early 19th century. Tales of Hoffman and Coppelia are both based on his books as is an even more famous ballet which has been staged more often than any other ballet with the exception of Swan Lake. Which other ballet is based on Hoffman's writing?
